What She Said…Delegating

I was part of a meeting a few weeks ago with about 10 female business owners from across the country. Everyone shared ONE thing that’s made the biggest difference for them as leaders and business owners. I wanted to share with you all because 1) it was great to hear that I’m not alone in certain challenges, 2) that it’s possible to overcome them, and 3) I learned about things I should implement that got me back some time that I didn’t know I needed!

Today I’ll start with a big one:

Hiring Your #2 or Delegating in General

As women, we often try to tackle everything ourselves. I’m sure we’re all also quilty of not delegating tasks even when we have people around us whose job is to do those tasks. Does it take more time to teach someone than to do it yourself, sure…the first couple of times perhaps. But it’s not only a game changer for you as a leader, you as an employee or business owner, or even you beyond work but it’s important for the people you work with to learn, grow, be empowered, and find dignity and fulfillment in their own work.

But you already know this.

So what are you going to do about it?

  • COMMIT. Each day, thing of one small step. I recently learned how impactful a 1° change can be.

  • DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN “SIT DOWN" with them.

    • Have a video conferencing platform? Record a quick video and use screen share if needed, and record you doing the work in real-time.

      • Utilize a free tool like Loom to record a video with or without your face. Loom automatically provides a transcript, but if you’re using another platform that doesn’t, you can run Otter.ai while you’re recording or during a playback and export the transcript.

      • Plop the transcript into ChatGPT with a prompt like, “Please take this transcript from a training video and make it into a process doc I can share with a team member, organizing it in different sections by the activity.”

      • Copy and paste into a Google Doc or an email. Clean it up a little if you have time, or don’t.

      • Done. You can do as much or as little as this process.

    • “I need you to do this thing. I don’t have time to walk you through it right now, but I recorded this video the last time I did it. Let me know if you get stuck!” BOOM. Simple. Done.

  • DOCUMENT everything

    • Keep a piece of paper next to you and every time you’re doing something you could delegate or create a training or process document for write it down. When you have time, knock a video or a process doc out. Don’t let perfection get in the way.
